Georgian human rights NGOs condemn the smear informational campaign against civil society of Georgia, particularly against human rights NGOs.
We also respond to the information spread by media according to which law enforcement bodies study the activities of the “agents working in non-governmental sector, so called NGOs.” We think this slander statements aim to discredit human rights non-governmental organizations. See in PDF

PRESS RELEASE

ARTICLE 19, together with other human rights organisations, urges the
Georgian government to stop pressurising and intimidating prominent Georgian investigative journalist Vakhtang Komakhidze.

Komakhidze reported receiving death threats from the Georgian authorities on 10 February. He had recently returned from a visit to South Ossetia where he has been producing a documentary examining the 2008 Russian-Georgian conflict. See in PDF

for Human Rights - FIDH), Human Rights House Foundation, Norwegian Helsinki Committee, Front Line and ARTICLE 19 condemn the pressure and intimidation exerted by Georgian authorities against leading investigative journalist Vakhtang Komakhidze, and denounce a continuous defamation campaign against Mr. Komakhidze. see in PDF
Paris-Geneva-Yerevan, February 16, 2010. The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), along with the Civil Society Institute, Helsinki Citizen’s Assembly Vanadzor Office, the Helsinki Committee of Armenia, the Collaboration for Democracy Centre, Transparency International Anti-Corruption Centre, as well as the Foundation Against Violation of Law, welcome the acquittal of human rights defender Arshaluys Hakobian.
On 19 January, 2010 the Court of First Instance of Kentron and Nork Marash districts of Yerevan, presided by the Judge M. Martirosyan passed sentence on Nikol Pashinyan, editor-in-chief of “Haykakan Zhamanak” daily and convicted him to 7 years of imprisonment.
On January 22, 2010 journalist Saba Tsitsikashvili, regional correspondent of Human Rights Center and editor of the regional newspaper “Kartlis Khma” (Voice of Kartli) was subjected to abuse and harassment by regional security guards in Shida Kartli. The guards abused Tsitsikashvili physically and verbally and obstructed him from carrying out his professional activities. 

On January 15 “South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders”, coalition of non-governmental organizations “Civil Manifest” and “Georgian Young Lawyers Association” organized a round table in the hotel “Ambassador”.

Non-governmental organizations in Georgia are deeply concerned by a smear campaign against human rights defenders and NGOs which surfaced in Georgia in December 2009. We are particularly concerned by the fact that those media and political figures used sensitive topics such as the Russia-Georgia war, ethno-territorial conflicts, minorities etc., to manipulate the public and mislead them in respect of human rights defenders and their work.

The Observatory has been informed by the Human Rights Centre (HRIDC) about the police raid of the Inclusive Foundation, a well-known Georgian Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) organisation, and harassment of its members. see futher in PDF

On the 10th of December – the international day of human rights - the members of the South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders celebrate the progress achieved in their struggle for freedom, equality and justice.

Norwegian PEN, the Human Rights House Foundation and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee are alarmed by the information that representatives of Special Operative Department (SOD) of Adjara Autonomous Republic within the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia have attempted to exert pressure and blackmail Tedo Jorbenadze, head of the investigative reporting team of the “Batumelebi” Newspaper. 
Южнокавказская сеть правозащитников осуждает факт задержания лидеров движения “7 Ноября“ – Дачи Цагурия, Джабы Джишкариани и Иракли Кордзая после того как они выразили свою гражданскую позицию, используя при этом абсолютно мирные средства. Сеть также осуждает факт наложения штрафа на задержанных в административном порядке.
