With coordination by the Open Society Georgia Foundation, five Georgian non-governmental organizations, among them are three members of the HRHT, addressed their written statement to the justices of the International Criminal Court concerning the commencement of investigation into the war crimes and crimes against humanity possibly committed during the August 2008 war.

Paris-Geneva, July 31, 2015 – The sentencing of human rights defender Rasul Jafarov to six years in prison was confirmed today by the before the Baku Court of Appeal. Arbitrarily detained since August 2, 2014, the conviction of Mr. Rasul Jafarov is based on trumped-up charges and aims at preventing him from carrying out his legitimate human rights activities, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders said today.

On July 24, 2015 Baku Court on Grave Crimes held pre-trial session into the case of Khadija Ismaylova, Azerbaijan investigative journalist. The three member court collegium considered motions of the parties. Not everybody could attend the session due to small space in the court room and high number of attendees.

On July 15, Baku Court on Grave Crimes held hearing into the cases of Leyla and Arif Yunus, famous couple of Azerbaijan human rights defenders. Leyla is charged for illegal entrepreneurship, evasion from payment of taxes, fabrication of documents and swindle. The last charge is imposed on her husband too. The prosecutor’s office blames them in high treason too, though it is a separate case and preliminary investigation is still going on.
Early Saturday morning, the Azerbaijani human rights defender Emin Huseynov landed in Switzerland, after spending over 10 months at the Swiss Embassy in Baku, where he was hosted for humanitarian reasons. He is free and safe.

The Baku Court on Grave Crimes has been discussing the cases of the arrested human rights defenders for two months already. On March 10, the Court continued discussion into the case of Intigam Aliyev, Azerbaijan human rights defender, who was arrested on August 8, 2014. The main part of the hearing was spent on the discussion of solicitations from the defense side. Interrogation of the witness caused conflict in the courtroom for what the judge postponed the process. 
Baku Court continued substantial hearing of Rasul Jafarov’s case, famous Azerbaijan human rights defender. The regular trial into his case was held on March 5. The more people are questioned about the accusation imposed by the prosecutor’s office on him, the more questions emerge.

Baku Pursues International Spotlight, Crushes Internal Dissent

(Berlin) - The Azerbaijani government should immediately release all wrongly detained activists and journalists, with only 100 days remaining before the first European Games begin. A new photo essay highlights the plight of 12 people serving or facing long prison terms in Azerbaijan, apparently in retaliation for criticizing government policies.
Civil activists held demonstration in support of detained human rights defenders and journalists in Azerbaijan. The demonstrators symbolically gathered in Heydar Aliyev Square and then marched towards the Azerbaijan Embassy in Tbilisi.
On August 22, in front of the Tbilisi office of the Council of Europe, Human Rights House Tbilisi and its member organizations organized demonstration in support of human rights defenders arrested in Azerbaijan. Representatives of the Public Advocacy and Georgian Trade Unions Confederation also participated in the demonstration.
The Human Rights House Network is calling upon the CoE parliamentary assembly to join our call to release Anar Mammadli immediately and unconditionally. Anar Mammadli, Chairman of the Azerbaijani Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Centre (EMDS) documented electoral irregularities during the presidential elections of October 9, 2013 in Azerbaijan.
On October 9, famous international organization - International Federation of Human Rights FIDH published a report about human rights situation in five disputed entities of the Eastern Europe.
Several days ago, famous international organization – International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) published a report Disputed Entities in Eastern Europe – Human Rights Sacrificed, which presents human rights situation in five disputed entities of Eastern Europe: Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia and now Crimea too.
